Bob Arum has said Gervonta Davis vs. Vasily Lomachenko could be made for November.
Davis takes on Frank Martin on June 15 as he defends his WBA Lightweight Belt. He enters the fight with a stoppage victory against Ryan Garcia last year. Lomachenko, meanwhile, bounced back from his unanimous decision loss to Devin Haney to beat George Kambosos Jr. to win the vacant IBF Lightweight Belt. A Davis-Loma fight would be a huge unification. The fight has been talked about for some time. Davis has always said he would fight Loma at the right time.
Lomachenko is now 36 and has shown signs he is not the fighter he used to be. Defeats to Teofimo Lopez and a controversial loss to Devin Haney proved that. At the same time, Lomachenko’s thoughts have been away from boxing. His country of Ukraine is at war with Russia, with the boxer having spent time with the soldiers.
The Ukrainian admitted that he only fought Kambosos due to the advice of his father, who did not want him to go out on a loss after the Haney defeat. While that may be the case, a win over Davis makes Lomachenko the top dog again. Given the amount of money on offer, Loma could walk away with a big sum into a potential retirement. Arum revealed that talks have been ongoing for some time.
“Davis and Lomachenko is a bigger fight than Davis and Shakur. If Tank is available and Lomachenko having a good victory over Kambosos, that’s the fight that everyone wants to see. We’ve been talking to PBC all along. We’ll absolutely resume conversations next week after this fight, assuming Tank Davis is successful on Saturday. It won’t be the start of negotiations.
“Carl Moretti has been talking to Louis DeCubas for a couple of weeks now. Hopefully, we’ll put it together for sometime in November. Nobody is dragging anybody to the table. Both sides know it’s a big fight, which means they’re looking forward to earning a lot of money, and they’re both competitive guys. I’m optimistic that the negotiations will go well. You can never guarantee that, but PBC are professionals, and my guys are professionals, and they’ll work it out,” Arum said
But once again, it raises questions over the timing of the fight. Davis has been accused of avoiding fighters when they are at their peak. Loma is not the same fighter. Meanwhile, a fight with Devin Haney is only being discussed due to his loss against Ryan Garcia. At the same time, Shakur Stevenson’s below-par win against Edwin De Los Santos has raised suggestions Shakur is not at the elite level against big punchers, one of whom is Davis.
While that may be true, Loma, Shakur and Devin are still big names on a resume. Given Davis has a 6-7 fight deal with PBC, which could lead him into retirement, he is looking to secure the biggest names. Lomachenko appears to be the first on that list after Martin.
