It didn’t take long for wide receiver Dominique Rhymes's free agent status to end as he decided to return to where it all began. The Redblacks announced Monday morning they had signed Rhymes to a two-year deal.
“Ottawa was the first place I played pro ball, I started my career here, met my fiancé here,” Rhymes said in a statement Monday. “I feel like I’m coming home, because I am. I’m still good friends with a lot of the guys from Ottawa; I’ve seen their kids be born, went to a Grey Cup; it’s just all love. I’m excited to get going.”
Rhymes signed with Ottawa back in 2017 and played in 22 games in his first two years with the team. His breakout season came in 2019 when he caught 65 passes for 1,056 yards and five scores. Rhymes left the team after that season, but he and his family have continued to call Ottawa home.
Rhymes played for the Lions for the last three seasons, including a 2022 campaign in which he set career highs in receptions (85), receiving yards (1,401) and receiving touchdowns (11), as well as being named CFL All-Star. The Lions released Rhymes last week.
Ottawa has been active on the offensive side of the ball, also making a trade with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last week to land quarterback Dru Brown. The Redblacks appear to be going all in on their future to win now.
