Heading into the weekend, the Saskatchewan Roughriders add a former star college football quarterback by signing Jack Coan on Friday.

Coan played in the XFL last year for the San Antonio Brahmas. He finished the season with 1,403 yards and six touchdowns in eight games.

After the XFL season, Coan had tryouts with the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. He also went to camp with the Indianapolis Colts in 2022 after not being selected in the 2022 NFL Draft.

From 2017-20, Coan was the quarterback for the Wisconsin Badgers throwing for 3,278 yards and 23 touchdowns in 25 games. His 2019 season was his strongest with 2,727 passing yards, which is the third-highest in a season in school history. That performance landed him on the All-Big Ten team as an honorable mention.

Coan would transfer to Notre Dame for his last season in college in 2021. In 13 games, he threw for 3,150 yards and 25 touchdowns, winning 11 of his 13 starts. He would set a Fiesta Bowl record for passing yards (509) and passing touchdowns (five).

The current quarterback room in Saskatchewan includes Trevor Harris, Mason Fine, Shea Patterson and Antonio Pipkin. Harris is the veteran who should hold his starting job. Fine showed flashes of being able to hold his own, so he should be the favorite to be the backup. Coan will be competing with Patterson and Pipkin for that last roster spot at quarterback.

Saskatchewan Roughriders open the season in Week 1 on the road against the Edmonton Elks on June 8.
