Cleveland State extends coach Dennis Gates through 2026-27

The Cleveland State Vikings were thrashed by the Houston Cougars in the first round of this year's NCAA Tournament, but that expected outcome took nothing away from what coach Dennis Gates achieved during the season held amid the coronavirus pandemic.

On Thursday, Cleveland State confirmed that Gates signed a contract extension that runs through the 2026-27 campaign.

The 41-year-old first accepted the gig ahead of the 2019-20 season and earned back-to-back Horizon League Coach of the Year Awards en route to guiding the Vikings to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2009 and their third ever.

"Cleveland State men's basketball has a very rich tradition and history, and I'm humbled to lead this program," Gates said in the prepared statement. "I'm excited for the opportunity to continue to grow upon the success our program has experienced the last two seasons, while building champions in the classroom, on the court and in our community."

Cleveland State president Harlan Sands added:

"Dennis Gates embodies everything we stand for at CSU: 'Engaged Learning,' teamwork and success in the classroom – all of which lead to success on the court and in life. We are all excited about where he will take our program next."

Gates' extension includes a pay increase and also incentives bonuses. He holds an overall record of 30-29 at CSU.
