One of the top names in the transfer portal was University of North Carolina Tar Heels Caleb Love. And after committing to the University of Michigan, Love re-entered the transfer portal yesterday.

We covered the journey of Love on this site and also discussed why transferring to Michigan made sense. However, a credit transfer issue apparently created a situation that now blocks his wish to transfer to the Wolverines. It is unknown exactly what those issues were, but it could possibly block another BIG10 team’s rumored destination, the Indiana Hoosiers.

So let’s go ahead and answer the question: Could Love return to the Tar Heels? The answer is yes. Within the NCAA rules and transfer portal process, Love could return to Chapel Hill. Coach Hubert Davis still has three scholarships open after seeing seven players (including Love) enter the transfer portal. Would he return to North Carolina and does that move make sense for Davis and Love? That question remains to be seen.

Tar Heel fans have a love/hate relationship with Love. He hit one of the greatest shots in UNC history against hated rival Duke in the Final Four. When he is great, he is great. Last season was not good for anyone in a Carolina uniform. The seven transfers underline the issues within the pre-season number one team that didn’t make the NCAA tournament. Right or wrong, many of those fingers were pointed at Love for not having the season many believed he would have.

Yes, Love could return to play for the Tar Heels next season. They have the scholarship and need players. With that said, I don’t see a reason for him to do so. Unless he can commit to team play and Davis can put him on the bench when it’s not his night, there is no reason to bring him back. Love should go to a team that will allow him to play a majority of the minutes and grow his draft stock. Carolina needs to move on and take advantage of the shooting and players that they have brought in through the portal.

Could Caleb Love return to UNC? Yes.

Should Caleb Love return to UNC? No.
