Coveted transfer guard Tyson Walker commits to Michigan State basketball

Northeastern University transfer Tyson Walker, one of the most highly coveted guards in the country, has committed to Michigan State basketball. He announced the decision via Twitter on Saturday.

Walker selected the Spartans after his final six included Kansas, Maryland, Texas, Miami and Vanderbilt, according to Jake Weingarten.

"They've been talking to me since I went into the portal," Walker told ESPN's Jeff Borzello about Michigan State. "They talk to me about every day. Just what they have and what they need. They're ready to win a championship. I'm the missing piece.

"It caught me by surprise, [Tom Izzo's] personality. We built a good relationship over the phone and through Zooms. What they were missing this year was a point guard."

Walker earned first-team All-CAA honors this season and won the CAA Defensive Player of the Year award with Northeastern. He averaged 18.8 points, 2.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists while shooting 44.4% from the field and 35.4% from beyond the arc.

Teams began to notice the sophomore after he notched 27 points, three rebounds and an assist against North Carolina in February.

Michigan State made the NCAA Tournament this season after going 15-13. They fell in the First Four to UCLA.
