Davidson men's basketball coach Bob McKillop retires after 33 seasons

After 33 seasons patrolling the sidelines for the Davidson Wildcats, head coach Bob McKillop announced his retirement on Friday.

McKillop, 71, has coached the Wildcats since 1989, compiling the most wins in school history, finishing with a record of 634-380.

Over his 33 seasons leading Davidson, McKillop was an 11-time conference coach of the year and helped lead the Wildcats to 10 NCAA  tournament berths.

Davidson also announced McKillop's son and longtime assistant, Matt McKillop, as successor; he's been with the program since 2008.

Fittingly, McKillop announced his retirement the day after his former player, Stephen Curry, won NBA Finals MVP. Curry, who graduated from Davidson earlier this year with a Bachelor of Arts degree, helped lead the Wildcats under McKillop to a remarkable run to the Elite Eight in 2008.

"Everything happens for a reason," McKillop told the media on Friday. "Did you see Steph after the game last night? He was crying, crying, tears. I thought that was a message to me: It's OK to cry today."

On a day full of announcements at Davidson, Director of Athletics Chris Clunie revealed the school's plan to honor Curry's accomplishments this August.

Not only will Curry be inducted into the Davidson Athletics Hall of Fame, but the school will retire his jersey and No. 30 during the ceremony.
