Former Michigan State star Durrell Summers knows a thing or two about going on a deep March run and he has faith in this year’s team.

Michigan State is marching on after its dominant 69-51 victory over Mississippi State. Up next for the Spartans is 1-seed North Carolina, but don’t let that get you nervous. The Spartans are playing extremely well, and much of the fanbase has a lot of confidence going into this game. Not only are fans getting their hopes up, but so are some former Spartan stars. One player in particular sees a lot of similarities between this year’s team and the 2010 Final Four squad: Durrell Summers.

Summers shares his excitement

This team is in a unique position now. As a 9-seed, the Spartans winning their first-round game isn’t a huge surprise. However, anything after that would be. Durrell Summers, a former Spartan basketball star from 2007-2011, knows a thing or two about winning in March. He also knows what it takes to go on a run when nobody expects you to.

Summers shared on X that it’s “Feeling like 2010” after MSU beat Mississippi State.

That 2010 team made it to the Final Four as a 5-seed. A 5-seed making that deep of a run doesn’t happen very often, but Summers got the feeling that we might be about to witness something special like in 2010 on Thursday afternoon.

The way this team played on Thursday also reminded me a little bit of the 2010 team. Nobody was ever going to outwork or out-hustle that team. They always had that look in their eyes where they meant business and nothing was going to get in their way. That’s exactly what this year’s team looked like on Thursday. From their ferocious defense to their elite team rebounding, Mississippi State never stood a chance of matching their energy. This isn’t something we’ve seen much this season, but this year’s team is turning it on at the right time.

Time will tell if this team makes as deep of a run as the 2010 team did, but one thing is for certain: Durrell Summers is a believer.
