Providence coach Ed Cooley is leaving for the head coaching position at Georgetown, replacing legendary Hoyas center Patrick Ewing, per Jeff Goodman of Stadium.
Cooley and the Friars were eliminated by Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Cooley, 53, has coached Providence for 12 years and taken the program to the tourney on seven occasions. But per Goodman, he has been interested in the high-profile Georgetown job “for years.” He will become the first Big East coach to leave one program for another.
“It’s a lot of decisions I need to make. It’s a lot of thinking I’m going to do,” Cooley said at the end of the season, via NBC 10 News. “I want to make sure I’m there for my players. I know you guys have been asking me that and I know you’re doing your job and I appreciate that. There’s a lot of reflecting I need to do, and I’ll definitely let you know what I’m going to do when this is all over.”
