Former Mountaineers Erik Stevenson and Taz Sherman are preparing to compete in the NBA Summer League starting this weekend. Stevenson will be playing with the San Antonio Spurs and Sherman will be with the Denver Nuggets.
Stevenson wrapped up his final year of eligibility at West Virginia, helping the Mountaineers return to the NCAA Tournament in March. Stevenson averaged 15.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists on 43 percent shooting from the field. The fifth-year senior played his best towards the end of the year, recording five-straight 20-point-plus games at the end of February.
Stevenson is pursuing a professional career in basketball. The Lacey, Wa. native participated in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament in April, competing in front of scouts. Stevenson worked out with multiple NBA teams this month, including the Washington Wizards and Cleveland Cavaliers before being signed as an undrafted free agent.
Sherman spent three years at West Virginia after transferring from Collin College, a JUCO in Texas. Sherman raised his point per game average over his three seasons averaging 5.3 points his junior year, 13.6 points his senior year and 17.7 in his fifth year. The 6-foot-4 guard shot 40 percent from the field in his career. Sherman became the 55th Mountaineer in program history to record 1,000 career points back in February. Sherman was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team in 2022.
Sherman played in Hungary this past season for Budapesti Honved, averaging 14.2 points per game.
