WVU interim head coach Josh Eilert announced the coaching staff on Sunday morning after his first week on the job. Eilert brings on former Mountaineer guards Da’Sean Butler and Jordan McCabe to pair with DerMarr Johnson and Alex Ruoff.
Butler played at West Virginia from 2006-10 under John Beilein and Bob Huggins, while McCabe played at WVU from 2018-21.
“We are thrilled to welcome Da’Sean back to Mountaineer basketball,” Eilert said. He’s a Mountaineer legend who is just a great human being. Da’Sean has NBA connections and is such a personable guy; he will fit in our program extremely well.”
“Like Da’Sean, we are elated to have Jordan back with Mountaineer basketball,” Eilert said. “We are fortunate to have a former point guard on our staff. He will be able to develop our guards and help them with the vision of where we are going. He, too, is wonderful with people in creating and maintaining relationships.”
Butler comes from the New York Knicks after serving as a video coordinator for one season. Butler also has worked as an assistant for the College Park Skyhawks of the NBA G-League and Wheeling University. At WVU, Butler appeared in 146 games for the Mountaineers, winning a program-record 107 games. Butler ranks third all-time in scoring at West Virginia with 2,095 points, behind Jerry West (2,309) and “Hot Rod” Hundley (2,180).
McCabe just finished his collegiate career at UNLV this spring after two seasons in Las Vegas. McCabe spent his first three seasons at West Virginia before transferring to the Running Rebels in his last two years. McCabe has expressed major interest in a coaching career and will get his shot early on. McCabe, 24 years old, will bring a modern mindset of college basketball in 2023 to WVU.
