Frankie Collins had 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists to lead Arizona State to a 63-52 win Saturday over Texas Southern in a nonconference game at Tempe, Ariz.

Arizona State (1-1) limited Texas Southern (0-2) to one made field goal in the last three minutes to hold on to the lead.

Kamari Lands had 12 points and Jamiya Neal added 10 points with seven rebounds for the Sun Devils.

Texas Southern, which shot 32 percent from the field while converting only 5 of 29 attempts from 3-point range, had only one scorer in double figures.

P.J. Henry had 12 points while shooting 5 of 24 from the field and 2 of 12 from beyond the arc.

Texas Southern also had 19 turnovers that resulted in 17 points for Arizona State.

Arizona State, coming off a season-opening loss against Mississippi State at Chicago, struggled from the field as well (37 percent shooting) and made only 15 of 28 free-throw attempts.

Texas Southern went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 40-38 with 12:56 remaining.

The Tigers went more than five minutes without making a field goal and Arizona State was able to build its lead 47-38 with 8:18 left.

The lead increased to 56-44 with 5:38 remaining after Collins made 3-pointers on consecutive possessions.

Arizona State led 28-20 at halftime after Texas Southern made only 29 percent of its field goals in the first half.

The Sun Devils gained separation scoring seven unanswered points to take an 18-8 lead with 11:02 left in the first half.

Texas Southern missed on four consecutive possessions in that span.

The Tigers hit another dry spell of 10 missed shots but Arizona State was cold as well going 2 of 13 in the span that culminated with the Sun Devils leading 21-16 with 4:28 left.

Arizona State pushed the lead to 28-18 with 2:31 remaining but failed to score the rest of the half.
