We know that the Ohio State basketball program is looking for a new head coach. Firing Chris Holtmann was needed after how bad the last two seasons went. There are plenty of candidates that the Buckeyes can look at. This is a job that should have no shortage of suitors based on what they can pay them.

Ohio State decided to hire Holtmann over Greg McDermott seven years ago. It was down to those two finalists and Holtmann got the job. Now, McDermott’s name is getting thrown around again to come coach the Ohio State Buckeyes. If you ask him though, it seems like he has given up the notion of coming to Columbus.

Greg McDermott shoots down notion he would take Ohio State basketball job

Speaking in an interview on Pardon My Take, McDermott seems to shoot down any notion of coming to Columbus. When asked by one of the hosts of the podcast “Which town would you theoretically like to retire in, Omaha, Nebraska or Columbus, Ohio?”, McDermott responded Omaha. He seems to want no part of the Ohio State job…yet.

Money always can change things. We saw how much money the Buckeyes were willing to pay Holtmann, especially when he got his extension. That buyout is massive. If Ohio State really wanted McDermott badly, they could offer him a ton of money to come to Columbus. How smart of a move that is, I’m not really sure.

Ohio State is already in talks with Dusty May about the position. McDermott may not even be someone Ross Bjork looks at this time around. We’ll have to see what kind of discussions those talks with May devolve into. I’m sure he won’t be the only coach that Bjork reaches out to. Expect him to reach out to Lamont Paris and a few others too.

It doesn’t seem like McDermott is interested either way.
