Indiana basketball senior guard Trey Galloway exited Sunday’s 65-64 win over Michigan State with a knee injury early in the first half and did not return.

Galloway left the floor at the 12:54 mark of the first half and was visibly limping. He was wearing a sleeve on his left knee. When he left, he was seen trying to stretch out his knee. He briefly sat on the bench before heading to the locker room where he changed to compression pants instead of the sleeve.

After working on the warmup bike and doing some jogging and cutting in the locker room tunnel, he returned to the bench but did not return in the first half. He did not return to the game.

“I don’t know what his status is right now,” Indiana basketball head coach Mike Woodson said postgame. “He’s being evaluated, so we’ll have a better feel of where he is tomorrow. But I give a lot of credit to the guys in that locker room that kept fighting.”

Indiana was up 20-5 when Galloway exited the game. He had five points and three rebounds in seven minutes.

Following his injury, Michigan State went on to outscore Indiana basketball 24-14 in the final 13 minutes of the first half. In total, Michigan State used a 22-2 run to take a 43-36 lead with 15:23 left in the second half. At that point, Indiana had gone through a stretch of making just two field goals since the 4:52 mark of the first half.

“Trey is definitely a big part of our offense, with him just being able to get downhill, throw the lob, or get to his flow offensively,” Indiana forward Kel’el Ware said postgame. “With him going down, I just felt like not even just me, but everybody on the team had to step up. If we wanted to get the win. I feel like that’s what we did.”

Galloway came into Sunday’s game averaging 10.8 points, 2.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. He is one of four Indiana basketball players with three games of 11+ assists in a career, joining Isiah Thomas, Jamal Meeks and Michael Lewis, doing so all in the last six games.

“It means a lot,” Woodson said. “As a senior that’s what I expect you to do. You know, you go through four years with the program, you grow. You’re supposed to grow every year. If you don’t grow then I haven’t done a great job in coaching. He’s grown and he’s helped us a lot this year in so many ways because we haven’t had Xavier Johnson, the other senior.”

Following Sunday’s win, Trey Galloway announced that he would be returning to Indiana next season and use his covid year.

During his speech, Galloway also hinted at being fine for the Big Ten Tournament.

Indiana basketball will begin Big Ten Tournament on Thursday this week, with its opponent yet to be determined.
