Jon Scheyer could be Duke's head coach for a long time

Even though the Duke Blue Devils' final record (23-8) and ACC seeding (fourth) are short of typical expectations from Blue Devil fans, there are still plenty of reasons to be pleased with first-year head coach Jon Scheyer.

In just one year, Scheyer swept rival UNC and became the only first-year coach in ACC history to post an undefeated record at home. Though not yet official, Scheyer likely snuck the Brotherhood into the NCAA Tournament as well.

The Blue Devils expectedly declined this year following the departures of Paolo Banchero, Wendell Moore Jr., Trevor Keels, Mark Williams, and A.J. Griffin to the NBA Draft, but Scheyer limited the damage while producing watchable, winning basketball..

Scheyer also showed undecided recruits that he can handle young talent.

Kyle Filipowski, a top recruit from the 2022 class, thrived in his first year with Duke, leading the team in points per game (15) and rebounds per game (9.2) on 29.1 minutes (ESPN). Freshman Tyrese Proctor also showed promising signs of development, finishing the season third on the team for points-per-game (9.1) and second for assists per game (3).

The Blue Devils currently have the nation's second-best recruiting class, according to 247 Sports, meaning that Scheyer will have more than enough talent to bring the program back to the top in the years ahead.
