Kansas coach Bill Self to miss rest of Big 12 Tournament after trip to ER

Kansas head coach Bill Self had to go to the emergency room for what is being called a standard procedure on Wednesday. As such, ESPN is reporting that the long-time head coach will miss the rest of the Big 12 tournament. 

His status for the NCAA Tournament is up in the air, though the school wanted to make it clear that any rumors of a heart attack are false.

"KU Men's Basketball Coach Bill Self is a patient at The University of Kansas Health System. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Steve Stites wants to clarify that Coach Self did not suffer a heart attack as reported by some media. He arrived at the emergency department last night and underwent a standard procedure that went well. He is expected to make a full recovery. There will be no further medical details released for now," the school wrote in a statement, per ESPN.

Self himself also released a statement on the incident.

"I am very grateful for the overwhelming number of well wishes my family and I have received," Self said. "I'm excited to get back with my team in the very near future."

Kansas played in the Big 12 tournament quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon without Self on the bench. Instead, assistant coach Norm Roberts was interim coach for the Jayhawks' 78-61 win over West Virginia. 

Roberts also reiterated that Self is okay, so everything seems to be trending in a positive direction.

"Coach is doing good," Roberts said. "I talked to him on the phone (after the game). He's doing well. He already wants to watch film and all of that. He's doing better."

Kansas' next matchup will be against Iowa State on Friday night. The Jayhawks won the Big 12 regular season title for the 17th time in Self's tenure with the university. Currently ranked No. 3 in the AP Top 25, Self's team seems to be closing in on a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

Self will certainly want to be there and so far the updates sound positive, but we'll have to wait and see what happens when the time comes.
