Kansas HC Bill Self ejected for first time in 25 years

Kansas men's basketball coach Bill Self's streak of not being thrown out of games is over.

Self was ejected for the first time in his 21-year tenure as the Jayhawks' head coach in Monday night's 79-50 blowout loss at Texas Tech. It was the biggest loss for the No. 8-ranked Jayhawks to an unranked opponent since 1950.

Self got the heave-ho with back-to-back technical fouls following an offensive foul called on Kansas center Hunter Dickinson with 5:49 left in the game.

Self, who has won two national championships, has been the Jayhawks' head coach since 2003. His last ejection came in 1999, while he was the head coach at Tulsa and his team was playing in a road game at Wyoming.

"I didn't curse the referee, I didn't yell," Self said in his postgame press conference. "But I did say the magic word, I guess, multiple times.

Self is the third Big 12 coach in the last month to receive their first ejection at their current school. Baylor head coach Scott Drew, who is tied with Self as the longest-tenured coach in the Big 12, was ejected in a Feb. 2 home win over Iowa State. Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson was ejected in a home win over Oklahoma State on Feb. 6.

Kansas (19-6, 7-5 Big 12) is currently in fourth place in the Big 12 and returns to action on Saturday at No. 25 Oklahoma (18-6, 6-5).
