The Kansas Jayhawks are adding a new face to the team – someone who is very much familiar with Lawrence, as Zeke Mayo has committed to play for the Big 12 powerhouse via the transfer portal.

Mayo announced his decision with a post on X (the social media platform formerly known as X).

“A homecoming like no other. Lawrence, KS, let’s rock.

#committed,” Mayo wrote.

Kansas Jayhawks Get Talented Scorer Via Transfer Portal

Rumors about Mayo taking his talents to the Kansas Jayhawks had already started floating long before he verbally committed to transfer to the program. Murmurs started to get amplified following Mayo and the South Dakota Jack Rabbits’ early exit from the 2024 NCAA Tournament . The Jack Rabbits lasted just a game in the Big Dance, as they got bounced out by the Iowa State Cyclones in the first round, via an 82-65 score.

Mayo should get ample playing time right away for the Kansas Jayhawks in the 2024-25 college basketball season, especially since the Big 12 powerhouse seemed to have a glaring need for a scorer in the backcourt  this season. Kansas concluded its 2023-24 campaign just 52nd in the nation with a 53.5 effective field goal percentage and only 69th with a 1.121 shooting efficieny.

In what turned out to be his final season with South Dakota State, Mayo averaged 18.8 points on 46.6 percent shooting from the floor and 39.1 percent success rate from behind the arc. Through three seasons in college, Mayo, who played high school basketball in Lawrence, has averaged 15.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.5 assists with a 38.8 percent shooting from deep.

Mayo did not get an offer from the Kansas Jayhawks, but he can now be expected to play a significant role for Bill Sefl’s team.
