Michigan State center Mady Sissoko has returned to Mali to host a youth basketball camp during his offseason.

For Michigan State center Mady Sissoko, basketball has always been more than a game. It’s been a way for him to give back to his home country.

While most college students are preparing for their summers off, Mady is currently in Mali running a youth basketball camp.

This is nothing new for Mady Sissoko. This past season it was revealed that Sissoko also gives all of his Name, Image, and Likeness funds back to his home country. Even though Mady currently resides in East Lansing, Mali is very proudly still his home. In an interview just prior to Michigan States game versus Kansas State, Mady said in an interview with Joey Ellis of Upper Michigan’s Source:

“That’s the mission we have right now, to build a school and give it to children who are trying to go to school,” Sissoko said. “I want to always give back, and I know how much people need help back home. So for me to have a platform and now give back is definitely a blessing for me to do that.”

Mady had an uncommon journey to a Big Ten court. He’s only been playing organized basketball for a few years and is still developing into his potential. As a relatively unknown prospect from West Africa, Mady has now gone head-to-head against some of the best players in the nation such as Oscar Tshiebwe and Zach Edey.

While Sissoko’s play has been frequently talked about by the fanbase, the one thing that isn’t up for discussion is his character. Tom Izzo takes great pride in not only developing his players on the court but also off. Mady is already and will continue to be the essence of what it means to be a Spartan.
