Memphis hires four-time NBA All-Star Rasheed Wallace as assistant coach

Former NBA All-Star and 2004 champion Rasheed Wallace agreed to a deal to become an assistant coach at the University of Memphis under Penny Hardaway, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania.

Earlier this month, Hardaway confirmed Memphis was in talks to bring Wallace on board. At the time, he gushed about the Philadelphia native, saying:

"Obviously, he brings a lot to the table," Hardaway said, according to WATN-TV. "He's played the game at a high level. He's a champion. He does have that in his corner. Anytime you can add someone like that, just to be able to have a conversation with him about joining our team, has been great; the conversations we've had."

During his NBA career, Wallace played for the Washington Bullets (now Wizards), Portland Trail Blazers, Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics and New York Knicks. He averaged 14.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game while shooting 46.7% from the field.

While he is best known for his playing career, Wallace also has coaching experience.

After his 16-year NBA career, Wallace was hired as an assistant coach for the Pistons during the 2013-14 season. He signed a two-year contract but wasn't retained after Stan Van Gundy was hired.

After his stint with the Pistons, Wallace took a break from coaching. In 2019, he was hired as head coach of the boy's varsity basketball team at Jordan High School in Durham, N.C. In June of this year, he accepted a position to be the next head coach at NC Good Better Best Academy.

Now in Memphis, he joins a coaching staff that also includes Cody Toppert and Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown, who coached the 2004 Pistons title team with Wallace as one of his star players.
