Michigan basketball has started to gain momentum with former Yale center Danny Wolf in the transfer portal. Wolf entered on Friday and had a no-contact designation.
Yet, there has been confirmed contact between Wolf and Dusty May, the new Michigan basketball head coach. Things seem to be progressing quickly to the point that Davis Moseley, a program insider, posted on X that he feels the Wolverines are in a “tremendous spot” to land the center from the transfer portal.
What Danny Wolf’s commitment would mean for Michigan
Wolf has played two seasons with the Bulldogs in the Ivy League but had a breakout season in 2023-24. The 7-footer averaged 14.1 points per game, 9.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.3 blocks, and shot 48 percent from the field. The big man converted better than 50 percent on 2-point attempts in addition to shooting 34 percent from 3-point range.
The Wolverines need a center after Tarris Reed entered the transfer portal. There was some chatter that he might consider a return, but there hasn’t been any other reporting on that front, other than a bunch of teams have already reached out.
Not center transfer Michigan baskeball fans expected
There was plenty of thought that Michigan basketball might be able to land former FAU center Vlad Goldin. Yet, if the Wolverines are close to a commitment from Wolf, that tells you all you need to know about Goldin. In other words, he’s not coming to Michigan.
Who knows what that could mean for the other FAU transfers? But May has been the Michigan basketball coach for a week and not a single FAU player has entered the portal.
Wolf would be a nice rebound, although the transition from the Ivy League to the Big Ten isn’t easy. Wolf scored 22 points in a pair of NCAA tournament games for the Bulldogs, including an upset over Auburn. Yet, he was just 6-of-23 from the field, although he made 3-of-8 shots from deep.
Goldin is a more proven commodity but you can’t recruit a dude who isn’t in the transfer portal and this tells me, if it happens, that Goldin won’t be leaving the Owls. Keep an eye on Wolf though. As long as he’s able to get through admissions (how can he not after going to Yale?), he could be a Wolverine very soon.
