During a massive win over No. 6 Baylor on Saturday afternoon, Michigan State basketball actually set a program record.

Michigan State basketball finally got its first marquee win of the season Saturday afternoon in Detroit. The Spartans faced off against an undefeated and sixth-ranked Baylor Bears team and dominated them from the jump. This was never really a game as Michigan State was up by 20 points for what felt like the entire game.

This win feels good for many reasons. First off, it is by far the biggest win of our season. Second, it helps our NCAA Tournament resume a ton. Lastly, it can help us get our swagger back and propel us throughout the rest of the season.

This game was awesome for many reasons. But arguably none are greater than the program record Michigan State just set in this game.

Largest margin of victory against a top-10 opponent

Can you remember a more dominant performance by Michigan State against a top-10 opponent? Me neither. That’s because there hasn’t been one. Michigan State’s 24-point win over Baylor is the largest margin of victory against an AP top 10 opponent in Michigan State basketball history. The Spartans have had countless big wins and dominating performances in our history. But none were more dominant than this one.

When you think about it, what a weird time this is for this record to be set. It’s no secret how awful this season has been before Saturday afternoon. Two bad losses to James Madison and Nebraska and the inability to notch a key victory had our confidence low. Most people thought we didn’t stand a chance against Baylor. And the ones of us who were confident thought it’d be a close game. But absolutely no one saw this outcome coming.

Michigan State has had countless great teams under Tom Izzo. We also know how difficult our schedule is each season, so we also have plenty of opportunities to play top 10 teams. Sports has a way of doing the unexpected, and that is what happened. Regardless of how the season ends, this team will be in the record books for a long time after this impressive performance against Baylor.
