Michigan State's Steven Izzo, Mady Sissoko test positive for COVID-19

Michigan State Spartans coach Tom Izzo confirmed on Wednesday that guard Steven Izzo, his son, and center Mady Sissoko have tested positive for COVID-19.

Tom Izzo battled the coronavirus last fall and offered some advice on what the players can expect to experience.

"At least for me, I can tell my son and Mady what I went through,” Izzo told reporters, per Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press. He added that both players tested positive for COVID-19 "four days ago" but that team activities have continued because all other players have returned multiple negative test results.

Programs around the country have routinely temporarily paused activities upon discovering one positive coronavirus test among players or other Tier 1 personnel.

Sissoko has appeared in 10 of 12 games for Michigan State and, per ESPN, is averaging 1.1 points and 2.0 rebounds across 5.6 minutes per game. Steven Izzo has participated in roughly eight minutes of action this season.

Per Big Ten guidelines, both players will be unavailable for team activities for at least 17 days.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Michigan State's upcoming game at the Iowa Hawkeyes, ranked No. 5 in the country, remained scheduled for Thursday night. Tom Izzo admitted, however, that he'd understand if the Big Ten ultimately chooses to postpone the contest because of coronavirus-related concerns.

The Spartans fell to 8-4 on the campaign via a 55-54 loss to the Purdue Boilermakers last Friday.

On Tuesday, the No. 22-ranked Oregon Ducks and No. 13-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers had multiple games postponed because of COVID-19 issues.
