New Mexico head coach signs contract extension with Lobos

New Mexico men's basketball coach Richard Pitino has signed a contract extension that runs through the 2027-28 season, the team announced on Friday.

"We are excited to commit to Richard Pitino to lead our men's basketball program into the future," University of New Mexico Director of Athletics Eddie Nuñez said in a Friday statement. "Over the last two seasons, I have been impressed with his leadership on and off the court and in the community. This past season, as our program saw success on the court, it coincided with significant increases in our ticket revenue, merchandise sales, concessions and donations.

"The time is right to invest in this program and I believe Lobo basketball has a bright future with Coach Pitino leading the way. This extension wouldn't be possible without the commitment of key donors who share in this vision for the future of the program, along with the continued support of the university administration and board of regents, who recognize how the success of athletics brings a spotlight to the university."

Having Pitino back is fantastic news for a program looking to take, and keep a competitive spot in the Mountain West Conference.

Pitino helped guide New Mexico from a 6-16 record during the team's final season under head coach Paul Weir to a 22-12 overall record and an 8-10 record against conference opponents last season. It earned wins over San Jose State and Fresno State before moving on to the Mountain West Tournament. The Lobos would acquire an 87-76 win over Wyoming in the first round before falling to Utah State in the quarterfinal.

New Mexico's 2023 recruiting class should provide some extra confidence in its ability to compete next season. The Lobos locked down three transfers and two four-star recruits in their 2023 class. Former Iona forward Nelly Junior Joseph, who averaged 14.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per contest last season, should be an exciting addition to a team that took second place in the Mountain West with 37 rebounds per game.
