On Monday, the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team tipped off their season opener with an 89-66 victory in a home game against Kansas Christian. The Panthers (1-0) had four players scoring in double digits. Javontae Hopkins led the group with 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Orlando Horton Jr. poured in 15 points, seven rebounds, and three steals, while Charles Smith IV added 14 points. 

The PV defense played a vital role in creating turnovers, forcing 16 turnovers that converted into 27 points. Hopkins led the way with four steals for the Panthers.

In the first half, Prairie View A&M found themselves behind 5-3 but managed to go on a 9-0 run with 15:24 left on the clock, taking a 12-5 lead. By the end of the half, they increased the margin to 10 points, going up 43-33.   

The Panthers came out of halftime, dominating Kansas Christian by expanding their lead to 59-41. They went on a 6-0 run to create a 24-point advantage at 65-41 with 13:05 left on the clock. Although Kansas Christian rallied, the Panthers notched their first victory of the 2023-24 regular season.
