Radio legend Mike Francesa reveals health scare similar to Kansas' Bill Self

It appears sports radio legend Mike Francesa knows a little bit about what Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball coach Bill Self has gone through in recent days.

Per Bridget Hyland of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com and Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post, Francesa was speaking about Self during the latest edition of "The Mike Francesa Podcast" when the 68-year-old media personality revealed he received a stent last year.

"I went into the doctor, had a blockage," Francesa explained. "They said, 'Hey you got a blockage, have to put a stent in.' They put the stent in, and the next day I feel OK.

"You have to take some medication after that, you’ve got to stay on blood thinners. You’ve got to watch what you eat, which I should’ve done years ago. But the bottom line is medicine’s great these days, so hopefully, Bill’s OK."

As noted by Jeff Borzello of ESPN, the University of Kansas Health System said on Sunday that Self "arrived at the emergency department Wednesday evening March 8" with "chest tightness and balance concerns." The 60-year-old later "underwent a standard heart catheterization and had two stents placed for the treatment of blocked arteries."

Self was discharged on Sunday, and he has since confirmed he plans to rejoin Kansas ahead of the upcoming NCAA tournament.

"I'm so thankful for the amazing staff at the University of Kansas Health System for the excellent care I received," Self said in his own statement. "I am proud of our team and coaching staff for how they have handled this and am excited to be back with them as the best time of the season gets underway."

Without Self, the Jayhawks fell to the Texas Longhorns 76-56 in the Big 12 tournament championship game this past Saturday.

Nevertheless, 27-7 Kansas earned a No. 1 seed and will face the No. 16-seeded Howard Bison (22-12) in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday afternoon.
