The Texas Tech Red Raiders basketball team has some holes to fill in the roster, due in part to the departures of Kevin McCullar Jr. and Terrence Shannon Jr. One place coach Mark Adams is looking is the transfer portal.

The transfer portal is becoming increasingly popular for players who seek better opportunities than their current program can provide, a sort of free agency for college players.

Also popular for college basketball players is the NBA Draft evaluation process, where players can investigate the likelihood of future NBA success without losing college eligibility. Some players utilize both at the same time.

One such player is senior guard Dominick Welch, who has spent the last four seasons at St. Bonaventure. He is taking advantage of the NBA Draft evaluation process and testing the waters of the transfer portal. And he has eyes on Lubbock.

The 6-5 native of Buffalo, New York averaged 12.3 points, six rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game with St. Bonaventure last season. He also showed durability by averaging almost 38 minutes per game.

No Red Raider averaged even 30 minutes per game last season.

He could fill a need for Tech next year, as he's a career 37.4 percent shooter from 3-point range. Last season he hit career marks for 3-point attempts (7.4 per game) and makes (2.8 per game).  In 2021, Adams' Red Raiders finished last in the Big 12 making 28 percent of their shots from beyond the arc.

Adams has already added D'maurian Williams and De'Vion Harmon to the roster, and both are deep-ball threats. It appears Adams is placing a premium on improving that aspect of the team's game for 2022. It's because of this that adding Welch might do more than just filling a roster spot.
