Virginia-Wake Forest men's basketball game postponed due to COVID-19

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons will have to wait for an opportunity to host the No. 15-ranked Virginia Cavaliers.

On Friday, the Atlantic Coast Conference confirmed that the Wake Forest-Virginia contest won't take place on Dec. 16, as scheduled, due to positive COVID-19 cases and subsequent quarantines affecting the Demon Deacons.

No makeup date was mentioned.

Wake Forest announced on Monday that it was pausing team activities following a recent round of coronavirus testing and contact tracing. That decision prevented the program from facing the Troy Trojans on Wednesday. Wake Forest also lists a game versus the Presbyterian Blue Hose slated for Dec. 13 as canceled. Athletic director John Currie explained in the prepared statement:

"After consultation with our medical professionals, and in an abundance of caution, we will pause activities within our men's basketball program for the rest of this week. Our top priority is the health and safety of our student-athletes, and given the significant increase in COVID-19 infections both in Forsyth County and throughout North Carolina, this is the right decision."

Head coach Steve Forbes added:

"Our program is always going to follow the advice of our University and local medical personnel. Although we are disappointed that we will be unable to play this week, this is the right thing to do at this moment."
