Virginia's NCAA-leading home winning streak comes to an end with upset loss to Pitt

Entering play on Tuesday, the No. 21-ranked Virginia Cavaliers had the NCAA's longest home winning streak at 23 consecutive games.

That winning streak came to an emphatic end against an on-the-rise Pitt team that is playing some of its best basketball of the season and making a serious push for an NCAA Tournament bid. Pitt's 74-63 win also snapped what had been an eight-game winning streak for the Cavaliers.

Pitt's Blake Hinson scored a game-high 27 points in the win. 

Along with snapping the Cavaliers' 23-game home winning streak, it was also just Pitt's second-ever win at Virginia. 

It's Virginia's first home loss since Dec. 17, 2022, when it dropped a 69-61 decision to then No. 5 ranked Houston. Dating back to the start of the 2022-23 season, Virginia is 28-2 at home after Tuesday's loss. 

The Cavaliers are still in a strong position for an NCAA Tournament spot, but it is a massive win for a Pitt team that is trying to play its way in off the bubble. Beating a Top 25 team on the road is a huge resume builder, and should be Pitt's second Quad 1 win of the season joining its road upset at Duke a couple of weeks ago. 

After a disappointing start and midseason lull, Pitt has now won six of its past seven games. 

Pitt would be a difficult team to deal with if it did get into the tournament due to its three-point shooting ability and a young backcourt of Jaland Lowe and Bub Carrington that is not only starting to play extremely well, but is also gain a ton of confidence.
