Watch: Memphis player punches Bowling Green player during handshakes after WNIT game

Bowling Green State University's Elissa Brett was punched in the face by Memphis' Jamirah Shutes in the postgame handshake line following the Falcons' NIT round of 16 win over the Tigers on Thursday night.

Bowling Green released a short statement following the incident, according to a report from The Athletic.

"The incident that took place following tonight’s home WNIT game has been turned over to the BGSU Police Department. Bowling Green State University Athletics does not make comments about active police investigations," the statement said. "Our priority is with the health, safety and support of our student-athletes."

Both Brett and Shutes are seniors, with the former finishing second on her team in scoring with 15 points and the latter pacing Memphis with 13 points.

Per Evan Barnes of The Memphis Commercial Appeal, Brett "laid on the ground for a while" following the strike, before walking off the court "on her own power."

Barnes added that, while it's unclear what led to the incident, the two players were involved in a notable play late in the first quarter.

"Shutes was double teamed by Brett, and Bowling Green teammate Sophie Dziekan. After Brett was whistled for a foul, Dziekan appeared to hit Shutes inadvertently in the face while going for the ball," Barnes wrote. "Shutes appeared shaken up and left the game for the Tigers' locker room. She didn't return until the start of the third quarter."

The Falcons will face Florida in the Great Eight of the NIT at 6 p.m. ET on Monday.
