WVU Basketball officially announced on Wednesday that Illinois assistant Chester Frazier will serve as the Mountaineers’ associate head coach under Darian DeVries.

“Chester is an unbelievable basketball coach. He is a relentless worker who is incredibly talented. Chester has been a winner everywhere he has been, and he builds strong relationships with his players,” DeVries said. “He is an awesome family man, and we certainly welcome him, his wife, Sarah, and children to Morgantown. Chester will be a tremendous fit for our basketball program.”

Before coaching at Illinois, Frazier was on staff at Kansas State and Virginia Tech with Bruce Weber and Mike Young. Frazier has played a large part in recruiting, having ties within the DMV area. Frazier is a native of Baltimore, Md.

Illinois HC Brad Underwood told the media on Tuesday night that Frazier would be leaving his program for West Virginia. Frazier, who played at Illinois from 2005-09 under Bruce Weber, joined Underwood’s staff in 2021.

Here’s what Underwood told Illini Inquirer:

“We thank Chester for his undying loyalty, his dedication. Nobody bled orange and blue more than him. He’s a guy that has lived it. But I’m excited for him. He came here wanting to win championships because he didn’t as a player, and he came away with two. I’m excited his path as associate head coach is the next step. Excited it puts him back in a vicinity where his name recognition will really I think pay off for him in his desire to be a head coach. He was fantastic and wish him nothing but the best.”

Since hiring DeVries, West Virginia has officially hired two assistants in Frazier and Nick Norton (Drake).
