Despite the rumors of wanting to leave for the Midwest, Mark Turgeon is finalizing a contract extension to remain Maryland men’s basketball head coach, according to college insider Jon Rothstein.

An official announcement from the university is expected soon. Terms of the extension have not been disclosed. Turgeon was previously signed through the 2022-23 season.

Turgeon has been at the helm at Maryland for 10 seasons. The Terrapins have made five trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2016.

In 2020, Maryland earned a share of the Big Ten regular-season title. With a deep roster, Maryland had high expectations for the NCAA Tournament. Unfortunately, March Madness was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This season Maryland finished 17-14 amid a rebuild following the departures of Anthony Cowan and Jalen Smith. Still, the Terrapins managed to grind out an NCAA tourney appearance, losing in the Round of 32 to Alabama.

Shortly afterward, rumors surfaced that Turgeon might be looking for a way out of Maryland. His name surfaced as a candidate for the then-vacant Oklahoma head coaching job.

However, the situation changed swiftly this week. Inside MD Sports reported Maryland athletic director Damon Evans offered a three-year extension with Turgeon likely to accept. Now, Turgeon appears set to guide the Maryland program for years to come.
