Caitlin Clark eyeing even loftier NCAA record after setting women's mark vs. Michigan

Caitlin Clark set the NCAA women's basketball scoring record on Thursday in No. 4 Iowa's 106-89 victory over Michigan, but the star has another historic mark within her sights.

With 3,569 career points, Clark is only 99 away from setting the all-time Division I scoring record, men's or women's, held by Hall of Famer Pete Maravich (3,667).

The Hawkeyes have four regular-season games left, meaning Clark would need to average roughly 25 points per game to pass Maravich. Considering she entered Thursday leading men's and women's D1 basketball in points per game with 32.1, it should be a relatively easy task.

Speaking of easy, Clark made history-making look like a breeze on Thursday. Needing eight points to pass Kelsey Plum for the all-time women's college basketball scoring mark, she went right to work, scoring the first eight points of the game for Iowa, capping it off with a three from the logo.

"Y'all know I was gonna shoot a logo three for the record, huh?" Clark told reporters after the game.

If setting the women's all-time record wasn't enough for Clark, she decided to break yet another one. Clark dropped a career-high and program-best 49 points in the win over Michigan, breaking the Hawkeyes mark set by Megan Gustafson in 2018.

Following Thursday's win, Clark tried to sum up her emotions after accomplishing such a significant feat on her home court in front of family and friends.

"I don't know if you could really script it any better," Clark said. "Thought we played really well tonight -- just to do it in this fashion, I'm really grateful."
