Caitlin Clark breaking the NCAA record for most points scored by a women’s basketball player is already folklore for the entire basketball universe. She has been receiving praise from all quarters since she set the record tonight. But no one expected former President Barack Obama to send his congratulations to Clark.
Caitlin Clark entered tonight’s game against Michigan needing eight points to surpass WNBA champion Kelsey Plum‘s record of 3527 points. She scored 49 points to take over the mantle as the highest scorer in NCAA women’s basketball history.
That is when former President Barack Obama sent out a tweet from his official account saying;
Congrats to Caitlin Clark, the greatest scorer in the history of women’s college basketball! It's been fun watching you and the Iowa Women's Basketball this season.
Caitlin Clark has been playing collegiate basketball for the Iowa State Hawkeyes for the past four seasons. The now senior has long been seen as one of the best scorers in women’s basketball history. Hence for a basketball fan such as President Obama, it should come as no surprise that he congratulates Clark for setting the record.
Clark can set one more record before the end of the ongoing season. She finished tonight’s game at 3569 points. The NCAA record for most points ever is 3667 held by NBA Hall of Famer, ‘Pistol Pete’ Pete Maravich. Clark needs 99 points to set the all-time record irrespective of gender.
Caitlin Clark’s journey to be the greatest scorer in women’s basketball history
Caitlin Clark was born in Des Moines Iowa. Her development at the high school level led her to be labeled a 5-star recruit. Despite receiving several offers from leading college basketball programs, she decided to stay home and join the Iowa Hawkeyes Women’s Basketball program.
Her fluid shooting action and ability to score off contact have made her into what she is today. Steadily improving her averages year on year, Clark has been single-handedly leading the Iowa offense from her freshman season. But the addition of her deep shots has left opponents unable to defend her this season. This season she is averaging an NCAA-best 32.1 points per game.
Caitlin Clark has etched her name in the NCAA history books drawing the appreciation from President Barack Obama. She could finish the year as the all-time best in college basketball history.
