ACC, Big 12 to decide on football, fall sports in late July

As SEC athletic directors reportedly plan to discuss options for college football and other fall sports next week, the ACC and Big 12 are embracing wait-and-see approaches.

On Friday, ACC commissioner John Swofford offered the following official statement:

“The health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and administrators remains the ACC’s top priority. As we continue to work on the best possible path forward for the return of competition, we will do so in a way that appropriately coincides with our universities’ academic missions. Over the last few months, our conference has prepared numerous scenarios related to the fall athletics season. The league membership and our medical advisory group will make every effort to be as prepared as possible during these unprecedented times, and we anticipate a decision by our Board of Directors in late July.”

ESPN's Heather Dinich reported Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said the league is "kind of on the same schedule" as the ACC. Bowlsby also told ESPN that member schools remain committed to a full football schedule as of Friday.

The Big Ten surprised many within the college sports community when the league announced on Thursday that it is moving to conference-only schedules for football and other fall sports if seasons occur amid the worsening coronavirus pandemic.

The Ivy League shut all fall sports down through the end of the year.
