Alabama just landed a 6-foot-7 tackle recruit with an ironic name

For most people, anyone over six feet tall is probably considered on the tall side of things. For athletes, though, and especially for left tackles, the taller the better.

It's an advantage. A major one.

Speaking of, height will certainly be an advantage for four-star 2025 offensive tackle Mason Short, who may soon have one of the most ironic last names in college sports.

Short is anything but. He checks in at 6-foot-7, 280 pounds, and he's still just in his sophomore year of high school, mind you. He could conceivably get taller, and he'll without a doubt get stronger and better with football through his junior and senior years.

It makes sense, then, that Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide extended him a super early offer. It also makes sense that the sophomore committed to Alabama. Few programs pump out elite, NFL-ready offensive linemen like the Crimson Tide do

"I felt at home at Bama right away," Short told 247Sports regarding his commitment to Alabama. "I know I will be developed into a great offensive tackle. They have a strong history of winning and sending linemen into the NFL."

It's worth noting that several other schools have already extended an offer to the soon-to-be junior, a list which includes Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Tennessee and Florida, among others.

Saban has a more than strong track record on the recruiting trail, but he will have to fend off all of these schools plus any other suitors that try to flip Short in the future.

Short is the No. 6 offensive tackle recruit in the 2025 recruiting class, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.
