Alabama knows its main two inside linebackers, Deontae Lawson and Jihaad Campbell, but its depth at the position showed immense potential last week in the spring game.

Kane Wommack’s 4-2-5 defensive system has fans and players excited to see how it works. Kalen DeBoer, Nick Sheridan, and Alabama’s offense dictated the tempo to start A-Day; however, the defense answered after adjusting. Justin Okoronkwo, a freshman, and Jeremiah Alexander (redshirt sophomore) looked great against the run and living in the opposing backfield.

Okoronkwo, a native of Germany, led the defense with 11 total tackles — including one for loss. He is still learning how to play organized football, but Okoronkwo has a massive upside. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder is extremely athletic and quickly picked up the defensive playbook in spring practice. Coach Wommack looks to utilize Okoronkwo’s skill set in different situations.

Alexander, a former five-star in the 2022 signing class, finished with seven total tackles.

The 6-foot-2, 249-pounder had five solo tackles and performed well in spring practice. An alumnus of Thompson High School, Alexander won a Class 7A state championship for the Warriors. He is now focused on helping the Tide’s defense to a College Football Playoff National Championship. Coach DeBoer said early in spring ball that ‘stuff happens’ when Alexander is in action.

Alabama has valuable depth behind at inside linebacker Lawson and Campbell, and that is huge.
