Former Nebraska football standout Rex Burkhead announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday, plus a new 2025 QB offer.
After a 10-year career in the NFL, Nebraska football legend Rex Burkhead announced his retirement from professional football on Monday.
One of the greatest players of the Bo Pelini era, Burkhead had plenty of famous moments for the Cornhuskers such as his game-winning touchdown reception in the epic comeback over Ohio State, or the 16-carry effort in the second half against Iowa, in an overtime win, on the road, that propelled Nebraska football to the Big Ten title game.
As an NFL player for the Patriots, Bengals, and Texans, Burkhead rushed 488 times in his career for 1,908 yards and 17 touchdowns. He was also an effective receiver and finished his career with 192 receptions for 1, 534 yards and nine touchdowns.
The Nebraska football standout played in two Super Bowls for the Patriots. Burkhead had a 46-yard reception, as well as 64 total yards in a Super Bowl loss to the Eagles.
But then, the next season, he ran seven times for 43 yards in the Super Bowl for New England over the Rams. He also caught two passes for 15 yards, giving Burkhead 122 yards from scrimmage in two Super Bowl appearances.
Burkhead was one of my favorite Huskers during his time in Lincoln and when he played in the league. So simply, thanks for the memories, Rex. You were one of the best to ever wear the Scarlet and Cream.
Nebraska offers another new QB in 2025
Glenn Thomas, the Huskers’ new QB coach has been busy on the recruiting trail since his hire, and on Monday, Nebraska offered another 2025 quarterback: TJ Lateef.
Lateef is out of California and is No. 243 overall in the 2025 class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Lateef is 6-foot-1, 185 pounds, and has an impressive offer sheet that includes Georgia, Texas A&M, Miami, Florida State, Arizona, Colorado, Penn State, Ole Miss, Oregon State, and Indiana (plus others).
The Huskers have been busy in terms of QB recruiting. The previous top target in the 2025 class, Alex Manske, recently committed to Iowa State. Since then, Nebraska football has offered Dillon Duff, Madden Iamaleava, and Matt Zollers.
There hasn’t been much movement with any of the QBs since they have offered, but keep an eye on which ones visit in March. That could be telling in terms of who the priorities are.
