The Arizona State football program had a nightmare season in 2023, winning three games, having a revolving door at the quarterback position, and getting blown out by their rival at home in the season finale. However, one of the four quarterbacks to spin the rock for the Devils last season will be playing for a new program next year. Per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Arizona State quarterback Drew Pyne, formerly of Notre Dame, will enter the transfer portal.
Pyne has three years of eligibility remaining. He will join a loaded transfer portal that includes Mississippi State record holder Will Rogers, former Kansas State star Will Howard, and former Oregon State gunslinger DJ Uiagalelei, among others, as the top quarterbacks.
Drew Pyne: Former Notre Dame Fighting Irish Quarterback
Drew Pyne started his career with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in 2020. He played behind Ian Book as a freshman and Jack Coan as a sophomore. However, Pyne saw decent action in 2021, going 15-of-30 for 224 yards and two scores in relief of Coan. Pyne lost out on the starting quarterback position in 2022, giving way to dual-threat signal-caller Tyler Buchner. Buchner suffered a season-ending injury in the team’s second game of the season, elevating Pyne to the starting role.
The Connecticut native played well, throwing 2,021 yards, 22 touchdowns, and six picks in 11 games. He also ran for 108 yards and two scores. With the departure of offensive coordinator Tommy Rees to the Alabama Crimson Tide, Pyne entered the transfer portal, committing to Arizona State.
Injury Heavy 2023 Season for Quarterbacks with Arizona State Football
Pyne suffered multiple injuries this season like the other Arizona State football quarterbacks. He played in just two games, going 26-of-49 for 273 yards and two scores against three picks. Arizona State used four quarterbacks this season, with Trenton Bourguet playing a team-high eight games. However, he threw just one touchdown against four picks while dealing with a leg injury and an illness at different points of the season.
Meanwhile, Jaden Rashada, the starting signal-caller to start the season, played in just three games while dealing with a leg injury. He could have played better in the season finale against rival Arizona, completing less than 50% of his passes for 82 yards and two picks. However, Rashada, a former top prospect in last year’s class, has the upper hand on the starting position next season. Additionally, BYU transfer and Arizona high school product Jacob Conover also played for the Sun Devils but threw three picks against no touchdowns on 11 of 38 passing.
