ASU football begins spring practice next week, but the Sun Devils will not be at full strength. Head coach Kenny Dillingham announced that a handful of players would miss some time in the spring on Thursday during a media availability.

One of those players is expected to be arguably the most crucial piece of Arizona State football’s offense in the 2024 season.

Several ASU football players will miss time in the spring

Jaden Rashada will be out for the entirety of spring ball. Rashada had surgery on his thumb following a non-football-related injury. The redshirt freshman mentioned that he broke his thumb lifting boxes as he was moving a couple of months ago.

This leaves ASU football with two healthy scholarship quarterbacks to compete in the spring, returner Trenton Bourguet and transfer Sam Leavitt. Bourguet is a face that many Sun Devil fans are familiar with as he has thrown for over 3,000 yards and 13 touchdowns in his ASU career.

Leavitt is a newcomer from Michigan State. He played sparingly with the Spartans as a true freshman, and only appeared in four games to preserve his redshirt season. As a true freshman, he threw for 139 yards and two touchdowns.

While Rashada is the most notable player who will miss time in the spring, he’s not the only one.

Other ASU football players dealing with injuries

Two returners from last year’s team are recovering from offseason surgeries. Both Xavier Guillory (WR) and Bram Walden (OL) had foot surgeries in the offseason and will miss most of, if not all, of spring ball.

Guillory last season had 21 receptions for 226 yards and a touchdown.

Walden played in six games last season for the Sun Devils.
