Defensive back Kyriq McDonald was also carted off the field after having a seizure during the national championship game last January while playing for Alabama. Butch Dill-USA TODAY Sports

Cincinnati Bearcats safety Kyriq McDonald was the victim of a frightening medical incident during Saturday’s game at Ohio State.

Just under five minutes into the second quarter of Saturday’s game, McDonald collapsed mid-play without being touched and began convulsing on the field. He had to be carted off, but appeared to be alert while being taken off the field.

ESPN reporter Allison Williams said McDonald’s mother told her that the safety has a history of seizures, and there is precedent for it happening during a game. McDonald collapsed on the sideline when playing for Alabama during the National Championship in 2018.

A redshirt sophomore, McDonald is in his first season with the Bearcats, having transferred from Alabama with an immediate-eligibility waiver during the summer.

That is a terrifying incident to witness in any context, but particularly on the football field.
