Cincinnati defeated Notre Dame 24-13 on Saturday night. Given that the Bearcats came into the outing as two-point favorites, the outcome wasn’t necessarily shocking — but the swiftness of it did catch some folks off guard.

After the game, Cincinnati took to social media to poke a little fun at the Fighting Irish.

But they didn’t stop there. They also made reference to a comment made by head coach Brian Kelly ahead of the big game in which he said he wanted to give schools like Cincinnati “an opportunity to play Notre Dame.”

Earlier this year, UCLA opted to mock an opponent after a big victory. We all remember what happened after that. It’ll be interesting to see if something similar happens here.

Kelly coached the Bearcats from 2006 to 2009, before ultimately leaving take over for Charlie Weis at Notre Dame. In that last year at Cincinnati, he guided the team to a 12-0 mark.

With this loss Notre Dame fell to No. 14 on the AP Top 25, while Cincinnati rose to No.5. The Bearcats are currently 4-0 with a very favorable schedule to finish out the regular season, so it’ll be interesting to see where they take things from here.

As for Notre Dame, it’s hard to view Saturday’s end result as anything other than the official dashing of any and all College Football Playoff aspirations. Kelly was passed over for a pretty prominent college coaching opportunity earlier this year, and one can’t help but wonder if he wishes that process had gone differently in light of what happened this weekend.
