Clemson lineman Hunter Rayburn medically disqualified, becoming student coach

Earlier on Thursday, Larry Williams of Tiger Illustrated/Rivals reported that Clemson Tigers offensive lineman Hunter Rayburn had been medically disqualified from playing football due to a neck injury.

Per Alexis Cubit of The Charlotte Observer and other outlets, a Clemson spokesperson confirmed the unfortunate news later in the day. Rayburn will transition to work under head coach Dabo Swinney as a student coach for the 2022 season.

Specifically, Rayburn is dealing with what are referred to as neck/stinger issues.

According to Julia Morris of WYFF, Rayburn played 603 career snaps across 19 total games with Clemson. He started six of nine contests in 2021 and was first inserted into the starting lineup for what became a 19-13 win over the Boston College Eagles back on Oct. 2, during which the Tigers rushed for a total of 231 yards.

The Associated Press (h/t ESPN) notes Rayburn was expected to be part of the team's starting offensive line when spring practices open on March 2.

Last summer, then-Clemson wide receiver Justyn Ross made a return from what was previously called a career-threatening spinal issue, and Reggie Anderson of WLTX recently pointed out Ross is set to participate in the upcoming NFL Combine. It's unknown if Rayburn is interested in attempting to play football at a competitive level at any point down the road.
