College football Week 3: Players to watch

His stats aren't mind-boggling, but Armstrong is a guy to keep an eye on. He's a wide receiver whom the Fighting Irish are using as a running back due to a lack of depth there, and he's been producing. The redshirt freshman already has three rushing touchdowns and last week had a big 42-yard run. He's just getting the hang of this, but he's becoming a big part of the Notre Dame offense. 

Leonard Fournette. Derrius Guice. Nick Brossette? Brossette has looked the part of a dominating LSU running back by averaging 131 yards per game this season. Against the Miami Hurricanes, he was lethal, scoring twice in the stunning blowout. This week he has a huge challenge going up against a tough Auburn defense. 

Dillon is one of the true hidden gems in college football. Against Holy Cross last week, Dillon ran for 149 yards and three touchdowns. Pretty good right? Even better when you realize he did that on just six total carries and all in the first quarter. The Eagles play at Wake Forest on the Thursday night game during what could be a downpour due to Hurricane Florence.

Who? Dungey has some people whispering that he could have a Lamar Jackson-type run to a Heisman. In Week 1 against Western Michigan, he completed only seven passes, but two went for touchdowns. However, he rushed the ball 15 times for 200 yards and a score. Last week against Wagner, he used his arm and tossed five TD passes and continues to climb the Orange record books. The 'Cuse host a struggling Florida State squad that last year Dungey nearly beat while playing on a broken foot.

Haskins has been terrific in his first two starts for the Buckeyes, but traveling to TCU for a huge prime-time game will give him the chance to make true believers out of everyone. He's already thrown for nine touchdowns in two games, and he also has that look of an Ohio State quarterback who quickly matches the hype. It should be fun watching him perform at AT&T Stadium.

People go to the Houston games for Ed Oliver — they stay because of D'Eriq King. Against Arizona last week, King did his Khalil Tate 2017 impression by running all over the Wildcats for six total touchdowns. He's already thrown seven touchdowns this season and is averaging nearly 300 yards passing per contest. Expect a shootout against Texas Tech this weekend.

Murray has gotten off to a great start this season. He's thrown for over 500 yards and five touchdowns so far and rushed for two scores last week against UCLA. He'll be relied on much more to carry the offense now that running back Rodney Anderson will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

If the Rebels have any shot at upsetting Alabama this weekend, Phillips needs to come up huge. He has done so in Ole Miss' first two games. He rushed for 204 yards and two touchdowns against Texas Tech in the Rebels' opener and followed that up with 107 yards and two more touchdowns against Southern Illinois. 

To be honest, this could go a few ways for Robinson as he goes up against Ohio State's stout defense. He could be like most opposing quarterbacks and struggle to find a rhythm against the Buckeyes, or he could light up Jerry World and become a star. He's a true dual-threat quarterback whose running style is pretty bruising (10 rushes all year, but they've gone for 112 yards and three TDs), and he's a very skilled passer. 

Is Boise State a playoff crasher? It could be especially if it can win at Oklahoma State this weekend. Quarterback Brett Rypien has been terrific this season, throwing for 667 yards and seven TDs in the Broncos' two games. The nephew of Super Bowl XXVI MVP Mark Rypien, Brett has had a decent career at Boise but needs to have a great season to be mentioned among the Bronco greats.

Snell may not have scored a touchdown in Kentucky's streak-breaking win over Florida last week, but his 175 yards rushing was a huge key to the win in Gainesville. Snell was right alongside Kerryon Johnson, Nick Chubb and Derrius Guice as SEC rushing leaders last season. This week he gets Murray State in Lexington. 

This will be Tagovailoa's next big test (ya know, right after a National Championship Game) when he goes on the road to play an SEC foe. Bama takes on OIe Miss in Oxford, and the Rebels have been a bit of a thorn in the Tide's side during the Nick Saban era. Tua has shown a great ability to make big plays with his arm, so it will be interesting to see how he fares on the road.

Taylor has simply been dominant this season. In two games, he has rushed for 398 yards and five touchdowns — with a 7.8 yards-per-game average — and is coming off a career game against New Mexico. He'll go against a BYU defense that has done fairly well against the run this year (especially against another Heisman hopeful, Khalil Tate).

Oklahoma State has had a nice run of good wide receivers. Is Tylan Wallace the next in line? His 14 receptions are double the amount anyone else has on the Cowboys. Last week against South Alabama, he caught 10 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown. This week the Cowboys have a huge game against Boise State.

Typically when we put a Sun Devil on these lists, it is receiver N'Keal Harry who gets the love. This week, it is the guy who throws those passes to him who gets some exposure. Last week against Michigan State, Wilkins looked poised, made timely plays and passed for 320 yards. This week the Sun Devils go west to San Diego State to try to keep Herm Edwards' hot streak going.
