Could NCAA cancel football, fall sports on Tuesday?
We could be less than a week away from the NCAA making a final decision on college football and other sports seasons occurring amid the coronavirus pandemic.
On Thursday, Bryan Fischer of College Football Talk noted that the NCAA Board of Governors is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, Aug. 4, to discuss how and if college sports are possible with coronavirus cases rising throughout the United States:
Fischer added that, whatever is decided, it certainly won't be business as usual for college football:
Last week, Football Oversight Committee chair Shane Lyons told ESPN's Heather Dinich he believes Aug. 4 is too soon to make a call on the football campaign:
"I still feel that the time in early August is still not the time to make the call that's going to impact something come November, December for the fall championships, which could be far-reaching into FBS football and bowl games and the regular season. Time is an asset, and we need to take advantage of that and not rush to make any decisions until we need more and keep moving forward."
Governing bodies have already altered previous schedules while remaining optimistic football can somehow be played on campuses. The Big Ten and Pac-12 moved to conference-only calendars but haven't yet released schedules. The ACC added the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as a temporary member for an 11-game format. Earlier today, the SEC announced its 10-game, league-only season will begin Sept. 26 and end with a championship game played on Dec. 19.
The NCAA could, however, drive a wrecking ball through those plans on Tuesday.
