Florida State and Georgia Tech to test opening game luck in Ireland come 2024

Florida State and Georgia Tech are taking their 2024 season-opening clash abroad. The two schools recently announced that their game to kick off the 2024 college football season will be played in Ireland.

"I am so excited for our student-athletes, coaches, staff, administration and fans for this opportunity," Florida State head coach Mike Norvell said in a statement, per ESPN. "

Added Yellow Jackets head coach Brent Key, "It's a unique chance for our student-athletes to experience a new culture, for our fans to support us at an incredible destination and for Georgia Tech to further promote our Institute, athletics department, students and alumni on a global stage."

Aviva Stadium -- also known as Lansdowne Road -- in Dublin will be the site for the contest. It's the home of the Irish rugby union team as well as the Republic of Ireland football (read: soccer) team. This is far from the first college football clash to be held at the stadium in recent years.

In 2012, Lansdowne Road played host to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Navy Midshipmen in the "Emerald Isle Classic". Notre Dame won that contest by a 50-10 final score. Northwestern and Nebraska also played a game at the venue a couple of years back. In the summer of 2023, the Emerald Isle Classic will add one more contest to the timeline.

This will not be unfamiliar territory for Georgia Tech, which played Boston College in Ireland back in 2016, coming away with a 17-14 win.

This will be first time in program history that Florida State will play in an international game.
