Upon assuming the position of head coach for the Colorado Buffaloes’ football team, Deion Sanders wasted no time in revamping the roster, evidently aiming to distance the program from the Karl Dorrell era.

In a recent report by The Athletic, former Buffaloes safety Xavier Smith provided some insights into Sanders’ tenure at Colorado.

Smith expressed his belief that Sanders could have handled the transition with more tact upon his arrival in Boulder. According to Smith, “He was destroying guys’ confidence and belief in themselves. The way he did it, it could’ve been done with a little more compassion.”

Moreover, Smith revealed to The Athletic that Sanders had advised him to “probably hit the portal” as he shouldn’t “waste a year” believing he could secure a spot on the roster. Such purported remarks evidently stung the three-star safety.

However, Sanders was forthright with the media regarding his intentions to enact substantial changes to the team roster.

“You all know that we’re going to move on from some of the team members, and we’re going to reload and get some kids that we really identify with,” Sanders stated, as reported by Fox News Digital. “… We recruited some guys that can light up the scoreboard and prevent touchdowns from occurring. We’re coming. We’re serious about that.”

The fallout from the mass exodus that occurred in 2023 will be closely watched, with anticipation mounting to see if additional former Colorado players step forward to share their experiences.

With all of this coming out and being said, it will be interesting to see how Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes fair this season. They’re facing a large amount of pressure to succeed.
