Scheduled to embark on SEC play on Saturday night against Tennessee, the Gators are bringing back a piece of the past to lead them into battle.

Trey Burton , an athlete who served in a multitude of roles for Florida throughout his time in Gainesville from 2010-2013, was named the Honorary Mr. Two Bits on Tuesday.

Accounting for 1,696 yards and 20 scores from scrimmage through four seasons with the Gators, Burton was a frequent option on the offensive side of the ball.

He served as a vital asset to Florida’s attack in the post-Tim Tebow years, giving some life to the sputtering offense synonymous with Will Muschamp’s run as head coach.

Upon Burton’s departure from UF after the 2013 season, the Venice (Fla.) native carved out a fruitful seven-year career in the NFL as a tight end. He’s most recognized for his role in the Eagles infamous “Philly Special” play call during Super Bowl LII, allowing them to convert a crucial 4th and Goal with a pass to quarterback Nick Foles just before halftime.

It would be his last contribution for Philadelphia.

Burton played three more seasons in the league — two for Chicago before heading to Indianapolis for one year in 2020. He never officially retired, but his playing days are considered behind him.

Now, 10 years later, Burton will return to his collegiate home to continue a pregame tradition at the University of Florida ahead of a monumental matchup for Billy Napier’s tenure as head coach.

The Gators will kick off against the Volunteers on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
