Former LSU coach Ed Orgeron to take 2022 off, open to coaching return

Former LSU Tigers coach Ed Orgeron said he has no plans to coach at any level during the upcoming 2022 season, but that a return to the gridiron in future seasons isn't off of the table.

"I want to take a year off," Orgeron said in a recent interview on the "Dan Patrick Show". "Settle down and then see what’s available for me next year."

Orgeron, 60, detailed in the interview that his kids are getting into coaching and that he wants to help get them settled into good jobs.

"They all want to coach," he continued. "My oldest son, Tyler, is 29. We’re trying to get them analyst jobs..."

Orgeron also mentioned letting "the dust settle" which is understandable following his wild exit from LSU. News broke in October that Orgeron and the school had reached a "separation agreement" but that he would coach the remainder of the 2021 campaign. Orgeron remained on the sidelines but did not coach LSU's bowl game against Kansas State. Details of what led to the separation remain scattered at best, although different stories have popped up questioning Orgeron's off-field behavior.

Whatever the reason, his departure was still a surprise given his success coaching at the school. Orgeron tallied a 51-20 record through six seasons including a 15-0 stint in 2019 that led to a national championship victory.

Prior to being named head coach, Orgeron spent two years as LSU's defensive lines coach. He also held multiple posts for USC, serving as defensive coordinator, defensive line coach, and recruiting coordinator during his stretch there 2010-13.
