Former Texas A&M HC Kevin Sumlin joins Maryland's staff

Kevin Sumlin is back in the college football ranks. No, he's not a head coach again, but he's pretty darn close to that level.

It's being reported that the former Houston and Texas A&M head coach is heading to Maryland to be Mike Locksley's associate head coach, co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach.

"Kevin brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our staff and I couldn't be more thrilled that he's joining our program," Locksley said, via the school website. "My relationship with Kevin goes back over 25 years. He has a tremendous football mind, along with a proven track record of developing players and winning at the highest levels. I'm excited to welcome him and his family to College Park."

Sumlin entered the college coaching pantheon when he was at Houston from 2008-11. He was regarded as one of the best young coaches in the nation at Houston, leading the Cougars to a 35-17 record in four seasons while once having his team ranked as high as No. 12 in the AP Poll.

He was considered a steal for Texas A&M when he was hired in 2012 and he started off strong with a 11-2 season with a Cotton Bowl win in his first campaign in College Station and a 9-4 season with a win in the Chick-fil-A bowl in 2013.

Sumlin then could only muster up three 8-5 seasons in a row before being fired in 2017 for a 7-5 campaign — the picture of mediocrity.

Sumlin spent two and a half seasons at Arizona but was fired in 2020 after an 0-5 start.

Last season, Sumlin was the head coach and general manager of the Houston Gamblers of the USFL.
